Monifieth & District

Phil Leckie, senior vice-president of Monifieth & District Rotary Club, challenged himself at the age of 63 to complete a ‘mini-triathlon’ – swimming one mile, running one mile and cycling mile – all in a time of less than one hour.

This was to raise funds for Rotary International’s ‘Thanks for Life - End Polio Now’ campaign, which aims to finally eradicate the disease of polio from the world. Rotary International has to reach a target of US$200 million by June 2012, to which will be added US$350 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Ally Martin, secretary of Monifieth Rotary Club, who also admits to being retired, volunteered to support Phil by also taking part. Both completed the course in under the hour – Phil in 51 minutes, and Ally in 59 minutes.

A total of around £2500 has been raised and this will be part of the Monifieth club’s contribution to the ‘End Polio Now’ campaign.

Phil, who was deputy rector of the High School of Dundee before he retired, said, “‘It was a bit of an effort. Both Ally and I trained quite hard for the event, but it was well worth it.

“I am extremely grateful to all who contributed – the generosity of many people has been fantastic. It is very gratifying to be able to raise money for such a worthwhile cause – and to strike a blow against ageism at the same time!”

David Barrie, president of the Monifieth club, summed up the admiration of fellow members for the achievement of Phil and Ally. “It has been a truly wonderful effort which has deservedly received great support.
